The Oki Islands Geopark is a new member of the Global Geoparks Network!
It was announced today at the 3rd Asia Pacific Geoparks Network Symposium, held at Jeju Island Geopark, South Korea, that the Oki Islands Geopark is a new member of the Global Geoparks Network.
Chairman of the Oki Islands Geopark Promotion Committee (Mayor of Okinoshima Town), Kazuhisa Matsuda made the following announcement.
“Today it is my greatest pleasure to announce that the Oki Islands Geopark has achieved membership into the Global Geoparks Network. As a resident of the Oki Islands, I am extremely proud that the special nature and culture of the Oki Islands has been internationally recognized.
Last year we received disappointing news that membership to the Global Geoparks Network was to be deferred. However, this time membership has been granted, thanks to the hard work of local residents who have developed ecotourism initiatives and shown their love of the Oki Islands. I believe that deferral of membership to the Global Geoparks Network became the strong incentive for each of the four local government offices, Shimane Prefecture, local organizations and specialists of the geopark, to unite as one to achieve this result.
The three towns and one village of the Oki Islands will continue to support the efforts of this new Global Geopark to develop the Oki Region and human resources whilst preserving and protecting the nature of the Oki Islands.
Once again, I would like to express my deep gratitude to all of the residents of the Oki Islands for your understanding and support, and to those involved for your great efforts in pursuit of this aim”.
