Select Oki Souvenirs Redesigned!
Here are the three local businesses that created new packaging and PR tools using the fiscal year 2024 “Oki Islands UGGp Package and Design Development Support Program.”
■Amano Shoten Oki Islands’ Seaweed
Amano Shoten (Okinoshima Town) created new packaging and PR tools for their seaweed product.
The newly created leaflet, poster and gift packaging were designed to convey the beauty of seaweed such as arame, wakame, mekabu, and mozuku that is harvested by hand from the sea surrounding the Oki Islands.
The completed design is warm and conveys to more people the nature and lifestyle on the Oki Islands—the foundational elements of this product.
This product is available for purchase in Okinoshima Town at Anki Ichiba, a local shop.
■Oki Ōfusha Kinnyamonya Manjū
Oki Ōfusha (Ama Town) created new packaging for their Kinnyamonya Manjū.
This manjū, a steamed cake with sweet filling, is the only souvenir snack named after Kinnyamonya, the traditional folk dance and song of Ama Town. Originally produced by a well-established sweets shop, this company took over their production in 2019 and continues to make each one by hand to this day.
The renewed printed packaging features new designs of dancing island residents and Oki Islands’ landscape. It has a fun look that will make anyone who picks it up feel that it is just like the island it comes from.
Warm, new packaging imbued with the legacy of the island’s culture: take it home as a gift from your travels or for a snack to enjoy in your lodgings.
It is available for purchase in Ama Town at the Tsunakake souvenir shop and Hishiuura Port Ferry Terminal.
■Chiburi Suisan’s Mackerel Sushi
Chiburi Suisan (Chibu Village) created new packaging for their Mackerel Sushi.
This mackerel sushi is a culinary masterpiece. Made with mackerel caught in the sea around Chiburijima Island, it contains no additives or preservatives, just simple seasoning.
Each piece is individually made with care by the company, with the hope that “the consumer can enjoy their fill of the umami flavor inherent in fish.”
In addition to the product’s unique characteristics, the packaging now displays the beauty of nature and lifestyles on the Oki Islands on the back.
This product is expected to go on sale in summer 2025, with plans to expand sales to tourism buildings on the islands, downtown hotels and restaurants, and eCommerce websites.
Giving shape to local charms: Oki Islands UGGp Package and Design Development Support Program
The three products introduced in this article were a part of the Oki Islands UGGp Package and Design Development Support Program.
It was inspiring to watch each business owner take the wonders of Oki Islands’ nature, culture, and lifestyles that they foster with their own hands and shape it into a product so that it can reach more people.
The packaging concepts and designs incorporate the feelings of people who live on the islands and the landscape that they want to preserve for the future.
At Oki Islands Geopark Management Bureau, we will continue to implement initiatives to convey the beauty of the Oki Islands to a wide audience as we support the local development of products like these.
