We attended the 132nd Annual Meeting of the Geological Society of Japan in Kumamoto!

Our Geological Researcher, Nakayama Sena attended the Annual Meeting of the Geological Society of Japan, held in Kumamoto in September 🔨

Nakayama gave a presentation entitled ‘Petrological Classification of the Ōyama Quartz-Diorite: Implications of Multi-Generational Magmatic Activity’.
The report details our survey of a rock known as ‘quartz diorite’, found in the vicinity of Mount Ōyama in Nishinoshima Town, and the discovery of a new rock type, ‘monzonite’!

This has enabled researchers to gain an understanding of the geology of the Oki Islands.
Going forward, we hope to use this rock to shed light on the formation of the Oki Islands.

Both Before and subsequently after the academic conference, our Oki Geopark researcher Nakayama took part in geological field trips to study rocks in Fukuoka and Nagasaki. In Fukuoka, she observed plutonic rocks that form part of the continental crust, whilst in Nagasaki, examined rocks that had been subducted deep underground. Among these, the green rock known as ‘listvenite’ was particularly beautiful 💚. We plan to display these specimens at the Oki Nature Museum and other venues at a later date.
