Geohistory - Rocks from Volcanic Islands Period

Geosites / Nishinoshima Town

This 257 m high cliff is the one of the most spectacular sea cliffs in Japan. It was carved by erosion from the strong winter winds and waves. If you look closely at the cliff, you can see layer upon layer of ash colored rock and dark red colored rock, the result of the repetitive volcanic eruptions that created the land.
