Fringed Galax Plant Group, Okutsudo

Although the Okutsudo Coast is 0 m above sea level, in April and May you can see the beautiful pink blossoms of the subalpine fringed galax (Schizocodon soldanelloides var. soldanelloides), a plant usually found on mountains. Other strangely-distributed plants growing here include mizunara oak (Quercus crispula) usually found in colder northern regions, Japanese cheesewood (Pittosporum tobira) usually found in warmer regions, and the continental seashore spatulate aster (Aster spathulifolius). Here you can see plants from a mix of different environments together, in a combination unusual on Honshu.
