The Future that Maros Pangkep Geopark and Oki Islands Geopark Aim to Build through their Cooperation Agreement
Protecting the bountiful earth and sea, a global partnership for the benefit of future generations
Maros Pangkep Geopark of Indonesia and Oki Islands Geopark have entered into a cooperation agreement.
In June 2024, Maros Pangkep UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp), located in Sulawesi, Indonesia, and Oki Islands UGGp, located in Shimane, Japan, entered into a cooperation agreement.
This cooperation agreement, aimed at preserving the marine environment and natural resources for future generations, contributes to fulfilling Goal 14 (life below water) and Goal 15 (life on land) of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
In particular, it touches upon the fact that a lot of marine debris is carried out to sea by inland rivers and incorporates initiatives to holistically protect both marine and terrestrial environments.
Both geoparks are also putting their efforts towards realizing the seven outcomes of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) and are developing activities that are also connected to quality education (SDG Goal 4) and responsible consumption and production (SDG Goal 12).
Past Initiatives
・November 2021: United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development kick-off meeting held at Oki Islands UGGp
・March 2023: Held the International Marine Debris Symposium in the Oki Islands
