English Camp 2024

1. Background

At Oki Islands Geopark Management Bureau, we aim to empower island residents to speak of the Oki Islands with pride and joy and are committed to fostering human resources that can tell the world about the activities and beauty that can be found in Oki Islands UNESCO Global Geopark. Through English Camp, an initiative to raise global human resources that can communicate across borders and can interact with people of all nationalities, our goal is to raise the interest of junior high school students in English.  

2. Goals

(1) Appreciate the fun of practically using English, making students more comfortable using English and speaking with people from abroad. 

(2) Through exchanges between junior high school students from the Dōzen Islands and Dōgo Island, raise student interest about each other’s part of the Oki Islands and the islands as a whole. 

(3) Gain the ability to express in English the appealing and interesting parts of the Oki Islands that they discovered during fieldwork.

5. Conclusion

Students at this year’s English Camp exhibited individual growth, not just in interacting in English or speaking with people from abroad, but also in other fields such as communication. Watching students work together to solve problems and have fun has convinced us at the geopark that it is essential for us to continue English Camp in future years. To do this, we believe that it is important for us to improve on any weak points and make a more robust program.
