FY2023 Designs Completed through Oki Islands UGGp Package and Design Support Program

The Oki Islands Geopark Management Bureau practices “supporting things grown or made in the Oki Islands.”

Here are three of the businesses whose products and pamphlets were created through participation in the Oki Islands UGGp Package and Design Support Program.

◆Iseki Suisan (Okinoshima Town)

Product name

OKI ISLANDS OYSTER     Single seed oysters
OKI ISLANDS ROCK     Single seed rock oysters

Comment from the producer

Our oysters are raised on nutrients that flow from the mountains to the sea and the power of nature.
The seawater and oysters are inspected before every shipment and undergo inspection once every two weeks after shipments begin to check for safety so that we can guarantee you can safely enjoy the wonderful flavors that the Oki Islands produce, all while we stay mindful of the environment and ecosystem through our oysters.

In addition to traditional methods of farming, we use the single seed method, a Western farming method of raising oysters separately from the seedling stage. Through repeated screening and cleaning at the young shellfish stage, the shell becomes cleanly shaped and easy to open, allowing us to raise good crops despite their small size. Each individual oyster is polished, cleaned, and inspected before being put into a continuously running water bath that has been disinfected with ultraviolet light. After at least 20 hours in the bath, the decontaminated oysters are ready for shipping.

【Final packaging】

Gloves and an oyster knife are included so even those who have never tried it can easily open the oyster shells.

Pamphlet included in the gift box.

The pamphlet shows how the oysters were raised and the best way to prepare them.

Oysters raised by the beautiful sea of the Oki Islands and Mr. Iseki.

Renewing the packaging and creating a new poster and pamphlet to introduce the products has increased the number of stores within the Oki Islands that handle these products.

◆Ando-Honten (Nishinoshima Town)

Product names

Oki Homare Sake Lees Crackers

Oki Homare Sake Lees Cake

【About this business】(Excerpt from pamphlet)

A local brewery stands close to Beppu Port, the gateway to Nishinoshima Town. Within its premises, the relics of a chimney, water tank, outdoor bath and ceramic kitchen stove that brewery workers used can still be seen to this day.

In 1910, the first sake brewery in the Oki Islands was established. It brewed the slightly sweet Gosho sake, a name meaning “imperial residence” after Kuroki-gosho, the imperial residence of Emperor Go-Daigo on the Oki Islands.

In 1972, the five breweries in the Dōgo and Dōzen areas established the brewery of Oki Homare sake, Oki Sake Brewery Co., Ltd., believing that “the Oki Islands are one.”

Our store works with a local bakery to create crackers and cake made of the flavorful sake lees left over from the Oki Homare brewing process. We also offer Oki Homare and a large number of other locally produced items and food products.

Please make sure to enjoy the unpretentious flavors of the Oki Islands.

Oki Homare Sake Lees Cake and Oki Homare Sake Lees Crackers

Handmade locally. This deeply flavorsome masterpiece is handmade and contains no additives.

It has a grown-up flavor of Oki Homare sake.

The light texture of the crackers makes them the perfect companion to beer!

The pamphlet also touches on the history of breweries in the Oki Islands.
