Rhyolite, Okutsudo Coast

Geohistory - Rocks from Volcanic Islands Period

Geosites / Okinoshima Town

This rhyolite was formed by lava around 5.5 million years ago, and has a characteristic flow-like striped pattern.
Rhyolitic lava is highly viscous and does not flow well; this keeps the different components in the lava from mixing as it spreads, resulting in this striped pattern.
