We Hosted a Geology Day Event!

On May 10th, for Geology Day, we hosted an event In the Oki Nature Museum where participants got to experience volcanic eruptions as well as hands-on microscopy experiments. These workshops were designed to give participants insight into how volcanic eruptions had a significant part to play in how Okinoshima came to be, as well as gain a deeper understanding of these rocks.

In the volcanic eruption experiment, we explained the mechanisms behind volcanic eruptions by comparing explosive eruptions and effusive (slow flowing) eruptions. We carried out the experiment on the day using a mixture of citric acid, bicarbonate of soda and washing-up liquid, and observed the bubbles gushing out. We are happy to say that the children watched the different eruptions and the reactions with great interest!

In addition to this, the microscope experience, using a polarising microscope, the children were able to examine common everyday stones under magnification. Even stones that looked ordinary to the naked eye, revealed themselves to have unusual patterns and sparkling minerals when viewed under the microscope. The children participating enthusiastically watched to observe the patterns and colour variations within the stones.

The Oki Nature Center houses a wealth of real specimens that allow visitors to learn about the formation of the Oki Islands, their rocks, and natural environment. During this event, there were instances where pupils who had previously visited the centre as part of a school trip took a great interest in the microscopy session and returned to take part again. It was clear to see how the children’s interests were broadening through the combination of these lessons and hands-on experiences.

The Oki Nature Centre continues to strive to create opportunities for visitors to learn about the land and nature while having fun.

We would like to thank everyone who came and participated in this event!
