Bigfin Reed Squid

The bigfin reef squid inhabits temperate to tropical regions and shallow rocky reefs in the Southern Hemisphere. It is about 35–40 cm in length and its swimming fins (used to alter the direction of movement) are characteristic.
Catches tend to increase in Shimane Prefecture as autumn deepens. They are mainly caught using pound nets. Among other squids commonly caught, the bigfin reef squid has the highest amino acid content (giving its umami flavor), and is widely consumed as food such as sashimi, deep fried squid, and grilled squid.
