Bigfin Reed Squid

The bigfin reef squid inhabit the temperate to tropical regions and shallow rocky reefs in the Southern Hemisphere. They are about 35 – 40 cm in length and their swimming fins (used to alter the direction of movement) are characteristic. Catches tend to increase in Shimane Prefecture as autumn deepens. They are mainly caught using pound nets. Among other squids commonly caught, the bigfin reef squid has the highest amino acid (the taste of umami flavour) content, and is widely consumed as food such as sashimi, deep fried squid and grilled squid.
